Making Our “Mosaic” Meaningful
By: Dakota Bibbs
In the School of Medicine, we believe that the future of health care begins with the youth of our state. Over the past two years we have had the opportunity to host the Mosaic Summer Enrichment Program. Mosaic is a week-long, residential program connecting all seven of the schools on UMMC’s campus in a collaborative educational effort focused on exposing rising rural high school juniors and seniors to careers in health care. The program is free to participants through the help of the IMPACT the RACE program (a grant funded by HRSA).
This year we have selected 50 students to participate in the program. Since its fruition, we have had the opportunity to impact over 100 students from all over the state. We have seen the fruits of our labor through the growing interest and excitement around Mosaic throughout the state. Additionally, many of our participants have informed us that they are choosing to enroll in college with the intent to pursue health care as a career. As the program matures, we are continually grateful to have a hand in shaping the health care mosaic of our state.
